I have nurtured my love for railroading since the age of three. While neighborhood kids were begging their parents for the latest toy, I was asking for "one more 4x8", the common size of a sheet of plywood. Increasing the size of my train layout was my greatest desire. As I grew older, I also acquired woodworking skills. incorporating the two seemed likely, thus, Magnificent Woodworkings. - David Cunningham
Dave's love affair with trains began when he was only three years old. While visiting family friends, Dave came across a non-working train. While the friends visited, Dave tinkered with the train until he was able to fix the sound. Now some 53 years later, Dave is still working with his beloved trains.
In 1972, shortly after graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in computer science, Dave expanded his woodworking repertoire to include furniture design. He began making furniture using a lathe given to him by his mother. Dave's first major piece was a baby cradle designed for his first-born son. During Dave's tenure as a computer systems analyst with Norfolk & Western Railway, he continues to create and sell custom furniture to many of his colleagues. Dave reinvested his proceeds back into his woodworking venture by purchasing additional tools that allowed him to broaden his design capabilities.
At 38, Dave left his computer science job and began building and remodeling. In the 1980's, Dave returned to his native Virginia and began the construction of his stunning Victorian-styled home. Dave's home is filled with intricate woodwork from the floors to the staircases and even the door jams. Dave started his own company, Cunningham Contracting, so he could build other custom homes in the New River Valley.
In 2002, Dave began making large scale wood model trains. With his attention to detail and years of custom woodworking experience, Dave's trains are nothing short of magnificent!
Dave makes every woodworking unique by carefully hand crafting every piece, down the finest detail. Each heirloom-quality woodworking typically takes between four and eight weeks to complete, depending on the item. He can work from a number of samples, including sketches, line drawings, scale model plans and in some cases photographs.
